Emma urges the Government not to grant anonymity to rape defendants
Emma Reynolds MP urged the Government to drop its plan to grant anonymity for defendants in rape cases. Emma raised the issue with the Tory Justice Secretary Ken Clarke in the House, citing the case of black cab driver, John Worboys. When he was charged for sex attacks, more than 80 other women came forward as victims.
Emma said ‘Granting anonymity to defendants in rape cases would risk violent criminals escaping justice. The John Worboys case shows that when an attacker is accused in public other victims come forward who may otherwise stay silent and this strengthened the case for the prosecution.’
