Emma Reynolds, Labour Member of Parliament for Wolverhampton North East, has condemned the Tory Government after the Chancellor handed £300 million to the wealthiest Tory councils to ease the pain of spending cuts. On the other hand Wolverhampton has been offered nothing.

Wolverhampton City Council has lost £160 million from its central government grant since 2010, making it one of the most severely hit councils in the country. Meanwhile, leafy Surrey – one of England’s wealthiest counties – has been given a hand-out of £24 million despite suffering far fewer cuts in recent years.

85% of the new additional grant, announced this week, will go to Tory councils.

Emma said:

“This hand-out to wealthy Tory councils is a stitch-up aimed at buying the votes of Tory MPs. Before this extra money was announced some Tory MPs had threatened to rebel against the cuts to local government spending.”

“Not only are the Tories punishing Labour councils like Wolverhampton, they are also blatantly misusing public funds to reward Tory councils. They won’t even say where the money is coming from. They won’t reveal what other vital public services will need to be cut to fund this bribe to Tory councils and Tory MPs, just weeks before the local elections.”

“Funding to Wolverhampton City Council has already been cut to the bone since 2010 and we are getting nothing but more cuts. The Tories are snatching millions of pounds from the pockets of my constituents in Wolverhampton in order to buy off their own MPs and councils.”
