For the past seven years, public sector workers in Wolverhampton and across the country have seen deep cuts to their pay.

With public sector pay falling faster than private sector pay and with another increase in the rate of inflation to 2.9%, I believe that the 1% pay cap for public sector workers needs to be lifted as soon as possible. We need to ensure that our dedicated public sector workers are truly recognised for what they do for their communities by being given their long delayed pay rise.

Earlier this month Parliament unanimously agreed a Labour party motion which called on the government to give NHS workers a fair pay rise. The government should comply with this vote as soon as possible as a first step. It should then give our teachers, policemen, firefighters and others similar pay rises.
