Emma Reynolds, Labour MP for Wolverhampton North East, attended the launch of the ‘Labour In For Britain’ campaign today in Birmingham. Former Home Secretary, Alan Johnson MP, is leading Labour’s distinctive to campaign to stay in the EU. A small business woman, a joiner and a mum explained how they had benefited from EU membership. These are the real stories of this campaign, the people whose lives and livelihoods depend on our country being in Europe.

Speaking at the launch. Alan said “Who will gain from the UK’s departure? Certainly not British workers, or businesses, or consumers. Certainly not our universities, or our scientists. All will be damaged and diminished along with our environment and our security. With challenges like the refugee crisis, terrorism and Russian aggression on the EU’s borders, Britain is stronger when working with our allies, committed to peace, democracy and international law.”

Speaking after the launch, Emma said “I was delighted to attend today’s launch. Labour will run a distinctive campaign to stay in Europe because we believe the challenges of the future are best met by working with others. Britain’s EU membership brings jobs, growth and investment.

“Almost half of our exports go to the EU. That was worth £227 billion last year to the UK economy. British jobs and businesses large and small are dependent on trade with Europe. We receive on average £26.5 billion of investment every year from other EU countries.

“British membership of the European Union is vital for Wolverhampton. Companies like Jaguar Land Rover have invested in Wolverhampton in part because of our access to the biggest free market in the world – the EU single market.

“The challenges we face don’t stop at the white cliffs of Dover. Criminals and terrorists do not respect national borders. We are safer and better able to catch and charge criminals due to our work and cooperation with our European partners.

“Furthermore, the EU guarantees workers’ rights, such as the right to paid holidays, and consumer rights, such as cheaper flights and mobile roaming charges.

“I will be playing an active role in the Labour In For Britain Campaign.”
